Frenemy

You are my loudest detractor,

Screaming over wounded confidence,

“You can’t; don’t try!”

You fool me to believe there is comfort

In observing dreams

From a distance.

Self-doubt, you

paralyze,

antagonize,

epitomize

me.

This is my response to the Trifecta weekend challenge, which I found…well, challenging:

This week we are taking you, once again, back to school for a lesson in literary devices.  Remember the apostrophe?  About.com defines apostrophe as, “A figure of speech in which some absent or nonexistent person or thing is addressed as if present and capable of understanding.”  Give us your best 33-word example of an apostrophe.

Check out Trifecta’s site for other responses, or to submit your own.  Come on,  you can do it (you know you want to)! 😛

~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-~~~-
Now for a little photo silliness to combat self-doubt:
If you believe you can soar, you will:
09-13 Balloon
If you shed your inhibitions, your inner monkey will be free to play (half-naked) in the rain:
09-13 Play in the Rain
If you want to reach the top you should, but I’d advise wearing protective gear (this goes for climbing cactus, or corporate ladders…it’s a prickly world out there :)):
      Thanks so much for reading, Pouringmyartout. You found this within a minute of it posting 🙂
        • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:19 PM
          Haha! Guess so 😛
        • pouringmyartout September 13, 2013 / 3:46 PM
          Writers of a feather… great minds… all that…
        • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:39 PM
          Well, I don’t know 🙂
        • pouringmyartout September 15, 2013 / 8:11 AM
          Well… okay… I might… but only to get you to buy my novel or follow my blog. Not about anything else.
        • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:24 PM
          Haha! Funny 🙂
  1. Valerie September 13, 2013 / 8:50 AM
    Janna, I battle self-doubt too. (Isn’t it annoying what a loud voice it has?) I could relate to this post so much, but I can’t tell you how comforting it is to be in such good company as you:) Great post-and I love the encouraging photos too!
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 1:54 PM
      I wouldn’t have guessed self-doubt nags you, too, Valerie. Maybe when we’ve had enough, we’ll yell back, only louder? Thanks for reading 🙂
  2. paulmclem September 13, 2013 / 9:16 AM
    Another excellent 33 word effort from Janna! Nice idea to make a personal thing like doubt the object of the apostrophe.
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 1:55 PM
      Thanks, Paul! My first one was Mother Nature, but I wasn’t “feeling” it, so I deleted and started over 🙂
  3. Tara R. September 13, 2013 / 9:23 AM
    We are our own worst enemy. Well said…
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 1:56 PM
      Seems to be fairly universal, Tara. I’m not sure why that is…
  4. djmatticus September 13, 2013 / 10:00 AM
    Very nice! *fist shaking* Self doubt, how you vex me!! 😉
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 2:10 PM
      Hahaha! I could picture Anton shaking his fist at self-doubt 🙂
  5. Joe Owens September 13, 2013 / 10:29 AM
    Self-doubt, never heard of it! Ok, so I am normal. This was great Janna.
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 2:11 PM
      I’m sorry self-doubt isn’t a stranger to you, either. Thanks for reading, Joe!
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 2:12 PM
      Self-doubt is an annoying busybody 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by, Gina!
  6. Kir Piccini September 13, 2013 / 10:50 AM
    you, YOU should never have self doubt (esp about writing) for it’s pieces like this that move me, awe me, inspire me.
    TGIF Janna. 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:10 PM
      Oh, I have doubt about a lot of things, Kir. Thankfully as I get older, I can sometimes ignore the doubt, suck up the terrified feeling, and go for it anyway 🙂 I appreciate you reading, Kir. Have a fabulous weekend 🙂
  7. seablackwithink September 13, 2013 / 11:01 AM
    J we are often our own frenemies ….irony at play…how can we doubt ourselves? and you…how could you ever doubt your words:)
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:13 PM
      It’s strange how we can slip into self-destruct mode when doubt kicks in. I doubt my writing all the time. (A creative writing class I took when I was 19 didn’t help.) As I’ve gotten older, the voice has muted some. Hey, at least there are some advantages to age 😛 Thanks for reading SBWI!
      • seablackwithink September 14, 2013 / 8:33 AM
        Same for me…have you ever heard the song “doubt comes in” by Anias Mitchell from the album “HadesTown”?
        You gave me a great earworm:)
        • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:54 PM
          I haven’t heard the song, SBWI…I’ll give it a listen tomorrow.
      • seablackwithink September 14, 2013 / 8:34 AM
  8. tedstrutz September 13, 2013 / 1:58 PM
    So, the loudest detractor is yourself? Don’t listen to her.
    • tedstrutz September 13, 2013 / 1:59 PM
      p.s. listen to the girl who put up those photos… I’d love to play in the rain with her.
      • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:18 PM
        Hahaha! The older me is ruled less by self-doubt. I branch out a little more, maybe because I see how fast time goes by. Frizzy hair aside, I enjoy a good rainstorm 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:15 PM
      If it’s me speaking, she normally doesn’t know what she’s talking about anyway. (What?!) We’re not as close as we used to be, but sometimes self-doubt still tries to crash my confidence. Thanks for stopping by, Ted!
  9. Ivy (Mommy Dourest) September 13, 2013 / 3:05 PM
    This is excellent and hits home. I’ve only recently started sharing my writing. It’s such a vulnerable position for me–letting someone read my words. The Trifecta challenges have helped a lot with that. Putting ourselves out there is risky, but the potential payoff is so worth it. Take that, self doubt!
    The last line sums up the whole thing very well.
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:21 PM
      I wish you couldn’t relate, Ivy (self-doubt stinks!) I’m glad you’re branching out. I enjoy reading your writing – I never know what to expect…sometimes you make me laugh…sometimes you make me cry….sometimes you forever change how I see Disney characters 🙂 Way to give self-doubt a shove!
      • Ivy (Mommy Dourest) September 15, 2013 / 1:31 PM
        Thank you, Janna! I love hearing you never know what to expect from my writing. I do like to mix it up and stretch myself. Sometimes I don’t even know what my mind will produce. Case in point: backstabbing Disney princesses and sex toys. My brain is a scaaaaary place. 🙂
        By the way, I forgot to mention the photos and captions in my first comment. Loved ’em!
        • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:28 PM
          I’m glad you enjoyed the humor, Ivy. Sometimes I’m the only one laughing 🙂 I’ll continue to expect the unexpected when I read your responses!
  10. Dhriti September 13, 2013 / 3:12 PM
    oh this is so true…
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:22 PM
      It’s oddly comforting that others can relate to this. (I wish it were a foreign concept to all of us!) Thanks for reading, Dhriti 🙂
  11. GodGirl September 13, 2013 / 3:22 PM
    ‘Comfort in observing dreams from a distance’ – can totally relate to this. This is such a clever response to the challenge, and a great definition of self-doubt.
    • jannatwrites September 13, 2013 / 3:24 PM
      I hope you are getting closer to your dreams, GodGirl. It’s only been recently where I’ve started shaking away from this; realizing that I’ll never know unless I try. Still, it’s hard to resist the comfort of doing nothing 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by today!
  12. uneven steven September 13, 2013 / 4:11 PM
    pretty cool – dreams at a distance we’ve all been there at one time or another
  13. KymmInBarcelona September 13, 2013 / 4:39 PM
    I’d take the self-doubt and stick it on any of those three rides, then give it a shove!
    nice one, Janna!
  14. Eric Alagan September 13, 2013 / 5:32 PM
    Here’s some silliness from me –
    If god wanted us to fly, he would have given us wings – or winged sandals 🙂
    We ate an apple and kept the fig leaf – Oops!
    Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! – That’s the high flier sliding down – no wings 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:35 PM
      Are you sure Brothers Grinn didn’t write this comment, Eric 🙂 I enjoyed the silliness!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:37 PM
      Thanks, Tonya. I appreciate you reading 🙂
  15. pattisj September 13, 2013 / 6:53 PM
    Still smiling at ‘inner monkey’ and how-to on climbing a cactus. Have a great weekend, Janna!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:40 PM
      I’m glad you found the humor in my silliness, Patti. Thanks for stopping by!
  16. debseeman September 13, 2013 / 10:56 PM
    “You fool me to believe there is comfort In observing dreams From a distance.” Says everything.
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:44 PM
      I’m glad that line stood out, Deb. I appreciate you reading it!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:45 PM
      Good point, Bjorn! Here’s to forgetting-and succeeding 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:46 PM
      Thanks so much, September Dreams. So glad you enjoyed this one!
  17. mademoisellemv September 14, 2013 / 3:12 AM
    Great prompt! You know… if self doubt is present, don’t forget talent is present in you!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:50 PM
      Thank you, M. I really appreciate your kind words 🙂
  18. Sini Rachel September 14, 2013 / 3:38 AM
    Loved the pictures and what you said about climbing cactus and corporate ladders.
    Oh yeah, don’t listen to that nag. Rise and rebel. You rock!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:52 PM
      Thanks, Sini! Great advice to ignore the nag 🙂
  19. ym1611 September 14, 2013 / 11:24 AM
    You took on a human characteristic! That’s a brilliant idea. Loved this
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:55 PM
      I’m glad you liked it – thanks for reading!
  20. Debbie September 14, 2013 / 11:26 AM
    You’ve simply outdone yourself, Janna! Loved the prose about self-doubt (who among us doesn’t wrestle with that?), and your “silly” photos are quite clever. I never tire of seeing hot air balloons!
    • jannatwrites September 14, 2013 / 11:58 PM
      So you’ve met this frenemy too, Debbie. I’m sorry 🙂 I’m glad you liked the silliness, too. Balloons are pretty…this one was from Albuquerque last year.
  21. vishalbheeroo September 14, 2013 / 1:14 PM
    Yummy trifecta, Jannat. Love the way how u play with words:) Btw, I wanna you write guest post for my blog. Are you game?
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 12:02 AM
      Thanks for reading, Vishal! I’m honored you would want me to guest. What would you want me to write about?
  22. Steph September 14, 2013 / 6:42 PM
    Oh yeah… you captured it perfectly.. I think to some extent, from one day to the next, we all know the feeling. And then we push it aside and do it, whatever it, is. Well said, Janna.
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 12:04 AM
      You’re right, Steph…there are moments we are free from doubt. Always nice when we make the most of it. Thanks for reading!
  23. Jo-Anne Teal (@jtvancouver) September 14, 2013 / 11:15 PM
    There’s a reason you get the most comments! As Steph says, you captured the feeling perfectly: how if affects us and how it seems to become who we are. Nailed it again, Janna !! I always enjoy reading your entries and discovering your take on the prompts. :))
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 12:11 AM
      Wow, your comment blew me away, Jo-Anne. I can’t believe you’d be interested in my prompt responses…yours are so much more creative and memorable than mine!
  24. MOV September 15, 2013 / 2:34 AM
    great writing! I especially liked how the words are all over the page, forcing you to really stop and focus on each one, one at a time.
    great job!
    best,
    MOV
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:23 PM
      Thanks, MOV! I’m glad you enjoyed this one – I appreciate you taking time to read it 🙂
  25. Sarah Ann September 15, 2013 / 5:34 AM
    Wonderful sentiments and great photos. Really enjoyed. 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:23 PM
      Thanks, Sarah Ann – glad you liked it!
  26. Lance September 15, 2013 / 7:07 AM
    Brilliant response. I identified with every word.
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:24 PM
      Thanks so much, Lance. I’m glad you could relate, yet sorry at the same time (if that makes any sense :))
  27. atrm61 September 15, 2013 / 8:28 AM
    Amazing girl!I can so relate to this Janna-love your take:-)
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:25 PM
      Thanks, Atreyee! I wish you couldn’t relate, but it seems self-doubt visits many of us 🙂
      • atrm61 September 19, 2013 / 7:39 AM
        True:-)But defeating them to live to fight another day-is again our win-so it balances out,don’t u think? 🙂
        • jannatwrites September 19, 2013 / 9:28 PM
          I believe so, Atreyee 🙂
        • atrm61 September 20, 2013 / 4:12 AM
          🙂
  28. trifectawriting September 15, 2013 / 5:13 PM
    Banish that self-doubt! You’ve got the right stuff; you just have to believe!
    Thank you for linking up!
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:32 PM
      I send it away, but it always seems to come back 🙂 This was a fun challenge…I really don’t know how you guys come up with this stuff each week!
  29. Momo September 15, 2013 / 9:26 PM
    This is awesome! I love the rhyming repetition of paralyze, antagonize, epitomize.
    • jannatwrites September 15, 2013 / 9:33 PM
      Thanks, Momo…I really appreciate you stopping by to read it!
  30. Quickstepp September 16, 2013 / 7:03 AM
    We are our own biggest enemy.
  31. Neetika September 16, 2013 / 7:10 AM
    Janna this is simply beautiful! All of your words…. Just wow! I love your take on the prompt and the manner in which you’ve described the feeling of self doubt.
    • jannatwrites September 16, 2013 / 11:28 PM
      Thank you so much for reading, Neetika! I’m glad you enjoyed this prompt response 🙂
    • jannatwrites September 16, 2013 / 11:40 PM
      Thanks, Nancy! It may not have “won” this week, but I was pleased with how it turned out…and many related to it, so I say it’s all good 😎
  32. Sandra September 23, 2013 / 12:47 PM
    I remember this prompt! It proved a bit too challenging for me. I should have though it like one of my Letters and just write to something, but too late. I like this poem about self-doubt. It’s such a hard thing to shake!
    • jannatwrites September 23, 2013 / 9:19 PM
      If you want to give it a go, it’s never too late to try it (even though the challenge is over.) Thanks for reading this one, Sandra!
