You are my loudest detractor,
Screaming over wounded confidence,
“You can’t; don’t try!”
You fool me to believe there is comfort
In observing dreams
From a distance.
Self-doubt, you
paralyze,
antagonize,
epitomize
me.

This is my response to the Trifecta weekend challenge, which I found…well, challenging:
This week we are taking you, once again, back to school for a lesson in literary devices. Remember the apostrophe? About.com defines apostrophe as, “A figure of speech in which some absent or nonexistent person or thing is addressed as if present and capable of understanding.” Give us your best 33-word example of an apostrophe.
Check out Trifecta’s site for other responses, or to submit your own. Come on, you can do it (you know you want to)! 😛

Now for a little photo silliness to combat self-doubt:
If you believe you can soar, you will:
If you shed your inhibitions, your inner monkey will be free to play (half-naked) in the rain:
If you want to reach the top you should, but I’d advise wearing protective gear (this goes for climbing cactus, or corporate ladders…it’s a prickly world out there :)):
awesome
Thanks so much for reading, Pouringmyartout. You found this within a minute of it posting 🙂
I am just that good!
Haha! Guess so 😛
Writers of a feather… great minds… all that…
Hey… would I lie to you?
Well, I don’t know 🙂
Well… okay… I might… but only to get you to buy my novel or follow my blog. Not about anything else.
Haha! Funny 🙂
Funny is sort of what I do.
Janna, I battle self-doubt too. (Isn’t it annoying what a loud voice it has?) I could relate to this post so much, but I can’t tell you how comforting it is to be in such good company as you:) Great post-and I love the encouraging photos too!
I wouldn’t have guessed self-doubt nags you, too, Valerie. Maybe when we’ve had enough, we’ll yell back, only louder? Thanks for reading 🙂
Another excellent 33 word effort from Janna! Nice idea to make a personal thing like doubt the object of the apostrophe.
Thanks, Paul! My first one was Mother Nature, but I wasn’t “feeling” it, so I deleted and started over 🙂
We are our own worst enemy. Well said…
Seems to be fairly universal, Tara. I’m not sure why that is…
Very nice! *fist shaking* Self doubt, how you vex me!! 😉
Hahaha! I could picture Anton shaking his fist at self-doubt 🙂
Self-doubt, never heard of it! Ok, so I am normal. This was great Janna.
I’m sorry self-doubt isn’t a stranger to you, either. Thanks for reading, Joe!
It undermine everything and everyone. Great pics, Janna!
Self-doubt is an annoying busybody 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by, Gina!
you, YOU should never have self doubt (esp about writing) for it’s pieces like this that move me, awe me, inspire me.
TGIF Janna. 🙂
Oh, I have doubt about a lot of things, Kir. Thankfully as I get older, I can sometimes ignore the doubt, suck up the terrified feeling, and go for it anyway 🙂 I appreciate you reading, Kir. Have a fabulous weekend 🙂
J we are often our own frenemies ….irony at play…how can we doubt ourselves? and you…how could you ever doubt your words:)
It’s strange how we can slip into self-destruct mode when doubt kicks in. I doubt my writing all the time. (A creative writing class I took when I was 19 didn’t help.) As I’ve gotten older, the voice has muted some. Hey, at least there are some advantages to age 😛 Thanks for reading SBWI!
Same for me…have you ever heard the song “doubt comes in” by Anias Mitchell from the album “HadesTown”?
You gave me a great earworm:)
I haven’t heard the song, SBWI…I’ll give it a listen tomorrow.
So, the loudest detractor is yourself? Don’t listen to her.
p.s. listen to the girl who put up those photos… I’d love to play in the rain with her.
Hahaha! The older me is ruled less by self-doubt. I branch out a little more, maybe because I see how fast time goes by. Frizzy hair aside, I enjoy a good rainstorm 🙂
If it’s me speaking, she normally doesn’t know what she’s talking about anyway. (What?!) We’re not as close as we used to be, but sometimes self-doubt still tries to crash my confidence. Thanks for stopping by, Ted!
This is excellent and hits home. I’ve only recently started sharing my writing. It’s such a vulnerable position for me–letting someone read my words. The Trifecta challenges have helped a lot with that. Putting ourselves out there is risky, but the potential payoff is so worth it. Take that, self doubt!
The last line sums up the whole thing very well.
I wish you couldn’t relate, Ivy (self-doubt stinks!) I’m glad you’re branching out. I enjoy reading your writing – I never know what to expect…sometimes you make me laugh…sometimes you make me cry….sometimes you forever change how I see Disney characters 🙂 Way to give self-doubt a shove!
Thank you, Janna! I love hearing you never know what to expect from my writing. I do like to mix it up and stretch myself. Sometimes I don’t even know what my mind will produce. Case in point: backstabbing Disney princesses and sex toys. My brain is a scaaaaary place. 🙂
By the way, I forgot to mention the photos and captions in my first comment. Loved ’em!
I’m glad you enjoyed the humor, Ivy. Sometimes I’m the only one laughing 🙂 I’ll continue to expect the unexpected when I read your responses!
oh this is so true…
It’s oddly comforting that others can relate to this. (I wish it were a foreign concept to all of us!) Thanks for reading, Dhriti 🙂
‘Comfort in observing dreams from a distance’ – can totally relate to this. This is such a clever response to the challenge, and a great definition of self-doubt.
I hope you are getting closer to your dreams, GodGirl. It’s only been recently where I’ve started shaking away from this; realizing that I’ll never know unless I try. Still, it’s hard to resist the comfort of doing nothing 🙂 I’m glad you stopped by today!
pretty cool – dreams at a distance we’ve all been there at one time or another
Thanks for reading, Steven.
I’d take the self-doubt and stick it on any of those three rides, then give it a shove!
nice one, Janna!
Haha! I like that, Kymm 🙂
Here’s some silliness from me –
If god wanted us to fly, he would have given us wings – or winged sandals 🙂
We ate an apple and kept the fig leaf – Oops!
Ouch! Ouch! Ouch! – That’s the high flier sliding down – no wings 🙂
Are you sure Brothers Grinn didn’t write this comment, Eric 🙂 I enjoyed the silliness!
Wow. Solid personification here.
Thanks, Tonya. I appreciate you reading 🙂
Still smiling at ‘inner monkey’ and how-to on climbing a cactus. Have a great weekend, Janna!
I’m glad you found the humor in my silliness, Patti. Thanks for stopping by!
“You fool me to believe there is comfort In observing dreams From a distance.” Says everything.
I’m glad that line stood out, Deb. I appreciate you reading it!
Very nice about self doubt … Sometimes we forget and become successes
Good point, Bjorn! Here’s to forgetting-and succeeding 🙂
Impeccable choice of words! Lovely piece Janna!!
Thanks so much, September Dreams. So glad you enjoyed this one!
Great prompt! You know… if self doubt is present, don’t forget talent is present in you!
Thank you, M. I really appreciate your kind words 🙂
Loved the pictures and what you said about climbing cactus and corporate ladders.
Oh yeah, don’t listen to that nag. Rise and rebel. You rock!
Thanks, Sini! Great advice to ignore the nag 🙂
You took on a human characteristic! That’s a brilliant idea. Loved this
I’m glad you liked it – thanks for reading!
You’ve simply outdone yourself, Janna! Loved the prose about self-doubt (who among us doesn’t wrestle with that?), and your “silly” photos are quite clever. I never tire of seeing hot air balloons!
So you’ve met this frenemy too, Debbie. I’m sorry 🙂 I’m glad you liked the silliness, too. Balloons are pretty…this one was from Albuquerque last year.
Yummy trifecta, Jannat. Love the way how u play with words:) Btw, I wanna you write guest post for my blog. Are you game?
Thanks for reading, Vishal! I’m honored you would want me to guest. What would you want me to write about?
Oh yeah… you captured it perfectly.. I think to some extent, from one day to the next, we all know the feeling. And then we push it aside and do it, whatever it, is. Well said, Janna.
You’re right, Steph…there are moments we are free from doubt. Always nice when we make the most of it. Thanks for reading!
There’s a reason you get the most comments! As Steph says, you captured the feeling perfectly: how if affects us and how it seems to become who we are. Nailed it again, Janna !! I always enjoy reading your entries and discovering your take on the prompts. :))
Wow, your comment blew me away, Jo-Anne. I can’t believe you’d be interested in my prompt responses…yours are so much more creative and memorable than mine!
great writing! I especially liked how the words are all over the page, forcing you to really stop and focus on each one, one at a time.
great job!
best,
MOV
Thanks, MOV! I’m glad you enjoyed this one – I appreciate you taking time to read it 🙂
Wonderful sentiments and great photos. Really enjoyed. 🙂
Thanks, Sarah Ann – glad you liked it!
Brilliant response. I identified with every word.
Thanks so much, Lance. I’m glad you could relate, yet sorry at the same time (if that makes any sense :))
Amazing girl!I can so relate to this Janna-love your take:-)
Thanks, Atreyee! I wish you couldn’t relate, but it seems self-doubt visits many of us 🙂
True:-)But defeating them to live to fight another day-is again our win-so it balances out, don’t u think? 🙂
I believe so, Atreyee 🙂
🙂
Banish that self-doubt! You’ve got the right stuff; you just have to believe!
Thank you for linking up!
I send it away, but it always seems to come back 🙂 This was a fun challenge…I really don’t know how you guys come up with this stuff each week!
This is awesome! I love the rhyming repetition of paralyze, antagonize, epitomize.
Thanks, Momo…I really appreciate you stopping by to read it!
We are our own biggest enemy.
‘Tis true, Quickstepp!
Janna this is simply beautiful! All of your words…. Just wow! I love your take on the prompt and the manner in which you’ve described the feeling of self doubt.
Thank you so much for reading, Neetika! I’m glad you enjoyed this prompt response 🙂
Fantastic!
Thanks, Nancy! It may not have “won” this week, but I was pleased with how it turned out…and many related to it, so I say it’s all good 😎
I remember this prompt! It proved a bit too challenging for me. I should have though it like one of my Letters and just write to something, but too late. I like this poem about self-doubt. It’s such a hard thing to shake!
If you want to give it a go, it’s never too late to try it (even though the challenge is over.) Thanks for reading this one, Sandra!
