More

Some say it’s not much,

But it’s often enough.

Roof is leaking,

Wood splintered,

Wind puffs at our door.

The rumble in my belly

 Makes me pedal hard-

   Looking for a dream:

       More.

When more is a dream, it can be heart breaking. Well written.

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:39 PM

Thanks, Joe. This picture was a sad one.

    • OldDogNewTits January 20, 2013 / 11:12 PM

Agreed. It was the perfect word.

It was nice to read about NOT the pigeon (which nearly everyone including me selected.)

      • jannatwrites January 21, 2013 / 3:55 PM

The pigeon was my first inclination, but then I changed my mind 🙂 Thanks for reading, ODNT!

  2. christina January 18, 2013 / 11:09 AM

ack see, i found this picture so depressing as well.

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:40 PM

I like uplifting pieces, but simply couldn’t come up with one this week, Christina!

  3. Tessa January 18, 2013 / 11:11 AM

I really love this Janna and you are the first one I read who selected something other than the tractor. Great job!

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:48 PM

There’s a pretty good mix of entries, some are quite sad.. Thanks for reading, Tessa!

  4. Kim Song January 18, 2013 / 12:08 PM

Wow, very moving. I made a connection with the condition of the house to her “rumbling” tummy. Great use of words!

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:49 PM

Thanks, Kim. I appreciate you stopping by to read it!

  5. jwilliams057 January 18, 2013 / 2:45 PM

Sometimes that desire is what gets you through.

  6. diannegray January 18, 2013 / 2:46 PM

Very sad – but so true 😦

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:50 PM

Yeah, this one is sad. Thanks for reading, Dianne! (I’ll see if my next post can be a little less depressing :))

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:52 PM

Yes, dreams can get us through, Renee. Thank goodness!

  7. nrhatch January 18, 2013 / 7:43 PM

You’ve said so much in so few words. Well done!
I’ll try to remember to swing round and vote.

  8. Patti January 18, 2013 / 8:33 PM

I like this a lot. Well done.

  9. Tom MacInnes (@cobourgcobbie) January 18, 2013 / 9:03 PM

I like this, too. The big trick for people in poverty; especially young children, it knowing that “more” actually exists, never mind, being possible to achieve. Thanks for being willing to shine a light on the issue of poverty and children.

    • jannatwrites January 18, 2013 / 10:54 PM

Very true, Tom. They might not realize life could be any other way. Glad you stopped by!

  10. pattisj January 18, 2013 / 11:12 PM

Good choice, Janna. Such a darling little girl. Hard to imagine how so many live.

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:30 AM

It is a sobering thought….especially when we start to feel like our life is too hard. Thanks for reading, Patti!

  11. yerpirate January 19, 2013 / 12:51 AM

There is a lot of positive here – very nice – she pedals fast, full of energy, and the ‘more’ can be very good..

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:32 AM

Thanks, yerpirate! I didn’t want to dwell on the tough circumstances, but hint at possibility.

  12. Misky January 19, 2013 / 4:42 AM

Lots of hope and future in this poem. Well don.

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:32 AM

Thanks, Misky! I’d hoped it wasn’t too depressing 🙂

  13. mindofshoo January 19, 2013 / 6:00 AM

This is wonderful. I love “the rumble in my belly”. It really makes you actually feel her pain. Well done! We can all dream.

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:33 AM

Yes, We can all dream! I appreciate you stopping by to read, Mindofshoo.

  14. Debbie January 19, 2013 / 9:16 AM

Sad. You’ve done a good job, capturing the emotions (especially the hunger).

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:35 AM

This picture was so sad to me. I wanted her to have hope for more, whether it be food, housing or occupation. Thanks for reading, Debbie.

  15. Draug419 January 19, 2013 / 9:45 AM

    Such a heartbreaking dream ;__;

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:36 AM

It is heartbreaking, Draug. Thanks for reading!

  16. steph January 19, 2013 / 10:06 AM

This is wonderful, Janna. The opening lines are real, and the last lines give hope.

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:42 AM

I’m glad you saw the hope in this piece, Steph. Thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂

    • jannatwrites January 19, 2013 / 11:42 AM

Thanks, Kymm. I’m glad you liked it!

  17. Gina January 19, 2013 / 11:59 AM

“rumble in my belly” “looking for a dream: More” I could feel this.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:09 PM

Thanks, Gina. I’m glad it made you feel something.

  18. deanabo January 19, 2013 / 3:16 PM

Sad yet hopeful. Pedaling towards a dream!

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:09 PM

I’d hoped that ‘hope’ came through here. Thanks for reading, Deanabo!

  19. Lumdog January 19, 2013 / 3:29 PM

You expressed exactly what I thought when I saw that picture. Beautifully said.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:10 PM

Thanks, Lumdog. I appreciate your comment.

  20. Rachael January 19, 2013 / 4:10 PM

Things are definitely rough when the dream is only of something “more” 😦 I hope her dream comes true.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:12 PM

I have a feeling she will get ‘more’. Hope makes me believe this, Rachael 🙂

  21. cshowers January 19, 2013 / 6:17 PM

This was beautiful Janna. I like that she has hope. 🙂

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:14 PM

Thanks, Cheryl. I’m glad you liked it 🙂

  22. themisanthropicmuse January 19, 2013 / 9:18 PM

I agree. Sometimes the only way we can put one foot in front of the other is through our hope of a better tomorrow, no matter how dire the prospect seems. Great story.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:18 PM

I like how you worded this, Muse. Hope does brighten an otherwise dark world 🙂

  23. muZer January 19, 2013 / 11:33 PM

Heart-breaking and sad for a child to struggle so hard. But dreams are sometimes the first step into a reality. I like that she dreams and that hunger for more is what will get her where she wants to be. I take that positivity from your words. Beautifully penned!

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:19 PM

I’m glad the hope came through, Muzer. I had to go there…I couldn’t write her destined for less.

  24. atrm61 January 20, 2013 / 8:24 AM

So sad yet this is a harsh reality we are seeing more & more.Dreams give us wings & possibly that’s what keeps hope alive in many a sad heart like this & keeps one moving forward-beautifully written Janna:-)

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:20 PM

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Atreyee! Hope does keep us moving…such a beautiful thing 🙂

  25. zennjennc January 20, 2013 / 1:52 PM

    Sad picture, but well written.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:20 PM

Thanks so much, Zennjennc. I’m glad you stopped by to read it 🙂

  26. trifectawriting January 20, 2013 / 6:38 PM

It’ll sound strange, but I’m starting to read the responses to this photo as a collective story. You guys have a lot of love for this fierce little girl. It’s a really beautiful thing to read them all. Thanks.

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:21 PM

There are a lot of similarities in the responses, but also many different perspectives. I can see how they can all form her story 🙂

  27. Imelda January 20, 2013 / 6:41 PM

I like her attitude. True, how many successful individuals are out there who have been driven to succeed by life’s difficulties. I root for this child. 🙂

    • jannatwrites January 20, 2013 / 8:24 PM

Thanks, Imelda. I admire the drive these people have, often much more than those who’ve got everything they ever wanted.

  28. jasmine calyx January 20, 2013 / 9:00 PM

    Excellent!
