Green Grass and Happiness

Trifecta Photo Challenge

Some say greener grass

Grows just across the fence.

But happiness is a choice

Between restless or content.

Anyway, since a calf can’t climb-

You play on your side,

I’ll graze on mine.

This is my entry for the Trifecta weekend photo challenge.  This one is community voted, so if you like it, please visit the Trifecta site on Sunday to vote.  If you don’t like it, you should still visit the site to vote because people much more creative than me post entries 🙂 The instructions given are as follows:

“Please give us a creative piece inspired by the photo below.  You have two options for word count: you can either give us 33 words or 333 words.  Please note: we are not asking for a post between 33 and 333 words.  We are asking for a post that is exactly 33 words or exactly 333 words.  Your choice. “

I LOVE this! Perfect wisdom in just a few lines.

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:35 PM

Thanks, Suzicate! I’m glad you liked this one 🙂

  3. Carl D'Agostino June 15, 2012 / 10:33 AM

Seems like that cow ain’t got much pasture land. Urban living I guess.

    • Widdershins June 15, 2012 / 11:44 AM

Yeah, and it looks like it’s on the street side of the barrier as well.

      • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:37 PM

I hope the drivers are paying attention, Widdershins 🙂

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:37 PM

Well, Carl, can’t tell from the picture, but I like to think his pasture is across the road…if he can dodge the cars.

  4. Widdershins June 15, 2012 / 11:46 AM

Nice piece … So, what would you do with 333 words and this photo?

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:39 PM

I don’t know for sure…I do know it would be from the calf’s point of view. Perhaps I’d write something about the adventure of getting across the road and the girl just ignoring him.

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:39 PM

Thanks, Newwhitebear. I’m glad you liked it 🙂

  5. Debbie June 15, 2012 / 1:40 PM

What a difficult challenge! You got it, though, and that’s what counts! Nice job!

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:40 PM

I took the easy route – I did the short word count 🙂 Thanks for reading, Debbie!

        • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:08 PM

Thanks, ODNT. Just wanted to keep it light and happy this weekend 🙂

  6. chlost June 15, 2012 / 2:34 PM

Very nice! It fits the photo perfectly.

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:42 PM

Thanks, Chlost. It was the first idea I thought of, so I just went with it 🙂

  7. judithhb June 15, 2012 / 3:07 PM

Well done Janna. I guess with the urban sprawl cows have to find gras where they ca. 🙂

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:44 PM

Thanks for stopping by, Judith. Looks like times are lean, for sure!

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:46 PM

Yeah, it does look sparse…but I like to think there’s more grass outside the frame of the photo 🙂 Thanks for reading, Jester Queen!

  8. Eric Alagan June 15, 2012 / 6:44 PM

This came across as a little sing-songish and I love it.

More asphalt than grass though…clever little girl stays on her side…

    • jannatwrites June 15, 2012 / 6:47 PM

I bet the girl’s parents are happy she stays on that side, too, Eric! I’m glad you like the poem…thanks for stopping by to check it out.

  9. lauriejlong June 15, 2012 / 7:19 PM

  12. vivinfrance June 16, 2012 / 5:55 AM

I like very much that it comes from the calf’s point of view!

    • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:07 PM

I wanted to do something a little different. I’m glad you enjoyed it, Vivinfrance 🙂

  13. awriterweavesatale June 16, 2012 / 7:27 AM

    Very cute!

  14. philosophermouseofthehedge June 16, 2012 / 8:25 AM

As I gaze at this one, the reflection is growing that the word play is amusing as well as wise. (Glazed over yet? Gleaning from the green!)

    • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:10 PM

I like your way with words, Phil. I’m glad you found the ‘play’ amusing 🙂

  15. Hannah Gosselin June 16, 2012 / 10:02 AM

I “went there, too,” the grass is greener…I really enjoyed your version!!

    • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:11 PM

I’ll check it out tonight, Hannah. I love to see what others come up with. Thanks for stopping by to read my entry!

    • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:11 PM

Thanks, Widdershins! I subscribe to Scriptor, also, so I’ll be sure to check it out 🙂

  16. Libby June 16, 2012 / 4:13 PM

Nice! And, the title, Green Grass and Happiness, sounds like a song from the 60s! 🙂

    • jannatwrites June 16, 2012 / 6:14 PM

Hmmm…maybe it was, Libby. Thanks for checking it out. Peace!
      🙂

  17. Kana Tyler June 17, 2012 / 11:49 AM

Aloha, from one “Janna T.” to another! I go by Kana now (my Hawai’ian husband’s transliteration to his language-without-a-letter-J) but my first name is Janna… And I’m glad I found you–it was the name that caught my attention (Janna-with-2-Ns is so rare!) but I love your writing. 🙂

    • jannatwrites June 17, 2012 / 5:47 PM

I haven’t “met” very many “Jannas” either, so I am glad you stopped by, too 🙂 I like the translation of Kana. It does sound so Hawaiian…and I love Hawaii (we visited Maui in April and ever since, I’ve been trying to figure out how I can move there 🙂

      • Kana Tyler June 17, 2012 / 10:12 PM

That’s definitely OUR plan! 🙂 We have an acre waiting for us on the Big Island, and we’re intending to open a Bed & Breakfast… But that’ll be a few years down the road (we’re anchored in Idaho for now by joint custody of my kids)… Here’s to big dreams! 🙂

        • jannatwrites June 17, 2012 / 10:22 PM

Good luck on your dream, Kana! When you open the B&B, I’d visit! (We’re likely going to be stuck on the mainland, but I can still visit paradise :))

Thank you so much for linking up to Trifextra this weekend. The challenge this weekend will be judged by the community. So please come back to the Trifecta home page and click the stars next to the three posts you most enjoyed. You only have until Monday at 8 am EST, so hurry!

  19. Christine June 17, 2012 / 12:47 PM

Janna, I love the sweetness of this. What a lovely little poem.

    • jannatwrites June 17, 2012 / 5:48 PM

Thanks, Christine. I’m glad you enjoyed it 🙂

  20. cuhome June 18, 2012 / 10:33 AM

    I really like this one!

    • jannatwrites June 18, 2012 / 5:42 PM

Thanks, Janet. I’m rather surprised at the positive response it received.

  21. Sandra June 18, 2012 / 11:49 AM

Congratulations on placing in Trifecta!! This is very sweet indeed. I didn’t comment the first time I read it since I was on my phone (that not-so-smart-phone), which tends to leave multiple (like 4) comments. But I’m back, and great job, Janna!

    • jannatwrites June 18, 2012 / 5:50 PM

Thanks, Sandra! Seeing as though I narrowed my voting list down to five, I was shocked that my piece placed this week.

  22. Imelda June 22, 2012 / 6:51 AM

    Congratulations, Janna. 🙂

    • jannatwrites June 22, 2012 / 4:13 PM

Thanks, Imelda. I was quite surprised to place in the voting 🙂
