Lapse in Absence of Judgment

“There’s nothing cute about it,” he said.  The register of his voice indicated decision more so than discussion.

She disagreed heartily and privately, staring past his head and out the window behind him.

“But it was on my day off.”

He said nothing.

“Am I fired?”

“I have no choice.”

She regretted posting the St. Patty’s Day belly shots photo.

And ‘friending’ her boss on Facebook.

This weekend’s Trifextra is community-judged.  If you think this entry deserves a vote, there will be a chance to vote for it for 12 hours following the close of the challenge.

This is my second entry in the Trifextra weekend challenge.    Here are the instructions:  For your prompt this week, we are giving you the first 33 words of a story. You need to complete it with 33 of your own words.  Here are the first 33:

“There’s nothing cute about it,” he said. The register of his voice indicated decision more so than discussion. She disagreed heartily and privately, staring past his head and out the window behind him.

Ouch poor kid, well I am assuming she is young. The absence of judgement is more common in the young especially on Facebook.

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:50 PM

Yes, she is young. I’d like to think an ‘experienced’ worker would have more sense 🙂

  2. jesterqueen March 23, 2012 / 6:10 PM

More so the friending on facebook. He does so have a choice. I hate when people hide behind that phrase.

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:51 PM

Me, too, Jester Queen. I had to put that in there because my bosses use it all the time when delivering bad news. Makes me wonder who the head honcho blames the decision on!

      • braintomahawk March 24, 2012 / 1:38 AM

well put! The two lines – he had no choice, she did – wonderfully done!
I have some overlap on my FB and work, but keep enough places anon/unknown for venting!

        • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:21 PM

Boundaries are a good thing, Braintomahawk! Here’s to claiming space of your own…and good judgment 🙂

  3. Imelda @ Cum Auxilio Ab Alto March 23, 2012 / 6:42 PM

Double dose of silly (unthinking) stuff. Between the two, befriending the boss seems to be the worse ‘offense’. This was a fun take. 🙂

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:55 PM

Definitely a lesson learned for her, Imelda. Bet she’ll think twice next time (on both counts!)

  4. nrhatch March 23, 2012 / 7:05 PM

I agree with JQ . . . people do tend to hide behind that phrase when other choices ARE available.

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:57 PM

It’s management lingo (when the manager doesn’t want to take responsibility for the action.) I’ve heard it before, Nancy (except it wasn’t for getting fired for doing belly shots or friending my boss on Facebook :))

  5. barbara March 23, 2012 / 7:31 PM

    belly shots?

as far as friending your boss on fb . . . GOOD LORD, NOOOOOOO! I don’t even use my real name. Many people know how to find me – so I try to keep it civil, but I am always aware that someone, somewhere is watching and sure to tell . . .

so I make that choice. 🙂

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:59 PM

I’ve never done belly shots, but a friend told me about it years ago. I could never imagine doing that, but perhaps after a couple shots it isn’t that bad?? I don’t have a Facebook account at all, so I have managed to avoid that madness!

Good policy to keep it civil, Barbara. It would be awful to have something innocent turn on you.

  6. MOV March 23, 2012 / 7:35 PM

    whoops………..

    best,
    MOV

  7. jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 8:59 PM

With any luck, she’ll not repeat the errors. Thanks for reading, MOV!

  8. pattisj March 23, 2012 / 9:23 PM

    Hahaha!

  9. OldDogNewTits March 23, 2012 / 11:06 PM

A problem people will be dealing with more and more these days. Perfectly stated.

    • jannatwrites March 23, 2012 / 11:18 PM

Unfortunately, yes, ODNT. I’ve heard many ‘oops’ stories from social media use. Glad I’m not among them!

  10. dunce two March 24, 2012 / 7:06 AM

Loved the crossed out “lapse.” And boss on Facebook = never a good idea.

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:21 PM

Thanks, Dunce Two. I’d have to agree – not a good idea at all!

  11. John March 24, 2012 / 7:11 AM

    A cautionary tale for sure!

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:22 PM

Thanks for stopping by to read it, John. A little judgement goes a long way.

  12. Widdershins March 24, 2012 / 8:41 AM

neat story! … did you read recently that in the US, some prospective employers are now asking for facebook access from job interviewees, at the interview. I’m so glad I’m self-employed, because my Facebook-less status would probably render me unemployable in the not-to-distant future.

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:23 PM

Thanks for reading, Widdershins! I have heard about the Facebook passwords. I’m afraid I wouldn’t have a job for two reasons (a) I don’t do Facebook or Twitter and (b) if I did, my password is none of their business.

  13. Debbie March 24, 2012 / 10:47 AM

Yikes, one more reason NOT to have a Facebook account! I know “everybody” is on there, but you and I aren’t, and aren’t we included in “everybody”?!

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:24 PM

I think we’re a smaller subset of ‘everybody’, Debbie 😆 I don’t like the idea of being that accessible to strangers…it was hard enough to scrape up the courage to do a blog!

  14. tedstrutz March 24, 2012 / 4:01 PM

That’s an interesting challenge. And an interesting prompt. 33 Words. I will have to go back and count. I think your’s was excellent! You told a story that is probably happening everyday… in just a few words… you made me care for her, and I’m sure she won’t make the same lapse again…

    Yep… 33 Words. Well done.

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:27 PM

Yeah, with any luck she’d learn from the mistake…or at least have some time during unemployment to mull it over 😉

Thanks for stopping by and reading this Trifecta entry. I appreciate it!

    • jannatwrites March 24, 2012 / 9:29 PM

Yep. Let’s hope she didn’t go out for belly shots that night to ease the pain! Thanks for reading, Nicole 🙂

  15. Libby March 25, 2012 / 9:02 AM

This was inspired! Nice job 😉

    • jannatwrites March 25, 2012 / 12:50 PM

Thanks for stopping by read my entry, Libby. I’ve had lots of embarrassing moments, but thankfully, this is not one of them!

  16. Sandra March 25, 2012 / 8:18 PM

Somehow I missed reading this one! Social media… in many situations, better “not post” than “delete later!” I’m glad this was not a personal experience =)

    • jannatwrites March 25, 2012 / 9:19 PM

Yeah, me too, Sandra. It’s a good idea to have a waiting period before posting.

  17. karen March 25, 2012 / 11:28 PM

Amazing some of the bad decisions that come out on The FB. Sad that belly shots might be construed as “bad”. And the others are right. Friending the boss, especially such a judgmental one, definitely shows a lack of wisdom. Ugh.

    • jannatwrites March 26, 2012 / 5:13 AM

I think the pictures of belly shots look worse than what they are (still not something I would do, much less post the pics). Judgment is good thing!

  18. Trifecta (@trifectawriting) March 26, 2012 / 4:47 AM

Thanks so much for linking up to Trifextra (twice!). Remember, this weekend’s entries are being judged by the Trifecta community, so I hope you were able to cast your votes. (There’s still just over two hours left if not!) Winners will be announced with the Monday post. Hope to see you back then.

    • jannatwrites March 26, 2012 / 5:18 AM

Thanks, Trifecta. If the prompt sparks a story (and I have time to write it) I’ll definitely be back for the weekday challenge 🙂
