Poetry – Dear Friend and Scratching Post

As promised on Monday, I’ve got two cat-related poems that I wrote last week.  It’s been several posts since I’ve done poetry, so I figured now would be a good time to share…especially since I don’t have a writing-related post ready.  (My manuscript writing class started Tuesday and right now I’m frantically trying to come up with a short story idea that I can complete in around 10 pages.  Next week, I may post about my progress).

Dear Friend

She wants food

Served on demand;

That’s what I do,

I obey my command.

After a long day,

My mind’s all a mess;

I’ve got nothing to say,

Nothing to give.

But at these times

Her behavior is best;

She curls by my side,

Lets me rub her head.

I am there

To scratch her ears;

Without a word,

She comforts me.

Soothed by her purr,

I mindlessly pet;

Without a word,

My troubles I forget.

Scratching Post

Curled up kitty-

Picture of contentment;

Peacefully sleeps

Upon the rustled bed.

She raises her head-

Many times she blinks

Before she stands to stretch

And makes her way toward me.

Several passes by,

Against me, her body brushes.

She looks me in the eyes

And suddenly I get nervous.

Before I can move away,

She stands and spreads her toes;

My denim-covered leg

Is her make-shift scratching post.
